Summary
- Diablo 4 players want Diablo 3's Conduit Shrines back due to disruptions in gameplay.
- Conduit Shrines in Diablo 4 feel like a punishment rather than a reward.
- Blizzard should consider revising the Conduit Shrine mechanic to improve player experience.
As Diablo 4 heads into Season 5, the Season of Infernal Hoards, some players are calling for one mechanic to be reverted to its former Diablo 3 state. Despite initial good impressions, Diablo 4's mechanics and endgame very quickly came under heavy scrutiny after launch, with players making many criticisms of the game's initial state. Over the course of five seasons, significant improvements have been made, but there are still some mechanics that players would like to see changed.
One such mechanic, as pointed out by one user on the Diablo 4 Reddit, is the game's Conduit Shrines, which are intended to give players a temporary burst of power by turning them into a ball of lightning that damages the surrounding enemies. However, as several players point out, the fact that the transformation aspect of the shrine prevents players from using their standard abilities often makes them deal less damage and make slower progress, unlike the equivalent Conduit Shrine in Diablo 3, which simply gave a chain lightning aura while still allowing the use of a character's normal abilities.

Diablo 4 Review: Classic Dark Hack 'n 'Slash Done Right
Diablo 4 is a great addition to the series with a dark and gritty tone that is expertly balanced by the satisfaction of mowing down hordes of enemies.
"Instead of making you feel like a god, it feels like a debuff," writes the original poster on Reddit. In the comments, multiple other players seem to agree.

Diablo 4 Players Want Diablo 3's Conduit Shrines Back
Diablo 4's Conduit Shrines Are More Of A Punishment Than A Reward
While some players have made suggestions like increasing the damage provided by the shrines, or allowing their damage to scale with player stats in some way, bringing back the Diablo 3 version would likely be the best-feeling solution. Although the Diablo 4 Conduit Shrine might feel better if it were simply stronger, taking away a player's standard abilities for what is supposed to be a buff will always be contentious, and the previous game's version is less disruptive to the normal flow of gameplay - even if Blizzard doesn't make it quite as strong as it was in Diablo 3.
In the Conduit Shrine's current state, many players tend to simply avoid it, preferring to keep playing their characters normally, and it can end up feeling like more of a trap or punishment rather than a temporary, powerful buff like it's probably intended to be. Even if the damage doesn't increase, simply allowing players to keep using their normal abilities while a Conduit Shrine buff is active would make the experience much smoother, and prevent players from feeling like they were punished for taking what's supposed to be a reward.

One Of Diablo 4's Most-Requested Features Is An Easy Way To Destroy The Entire Game
Diablo 4 is facing massive requests for a new social feature, but its inclusion would likely lead to the destruction of the ARPG's core concepts.

Hopefully, as the game progresses through Season 5 and eventually moves on to later Seasons, Blizzard will make more gameplay changes to iron out the remaining issues. While the game has improved greatly from its state at launch, player complaints about the Conduit Shrines prove that Diablo 4 can still make big improvements in many areas of the game.
