Key Takeaways

  • Our pick for the top mattress for snoring is the Helix Midnight because it provides support for side sleepers and combination sleepers, pairs well with adjustable bases, and uses hypoallergenic materials.
  • Pressure relief is the most important factor for people who snore because it allows for more comfortable side sleeping, the position most often recommended to reduce snoring.
  • Our picks for mattresses for snoring range in cost from $1,249–$2,233 (before discounts) for a queen size.
  • Snoring is sometimes a sign of an underlying sleep disorder called obstructive obstructive sleep apneaObstructive sleep apnea, the most common form, occurs when the throat muscles relax, blocking the flow of air into the lungs , which should be treated by a medical professional.

Snoring is a common sleep issue among adults, affecting an estimated 25%–50% of people. This can disrupt not only the sleep of the person who snores, leading to daytime fatigue and health concerns like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but their partner’s ability to stay asleep as well, which can lead to relationship tensions and potential health problems for the partner due to lack of restful sleep.

While snoring has many causes, sleep position plays a significant role. When we lie on our back to sleep, the muscles in the back of the throat relax, sometimes collapsing into the airway and blocking the passage of air. Snoring is the sound made by the vibration of tissues in the narrowed airway. To prevent this from occurring, side sleeping or sleeping at an incline is often recommended to patients to reduce snoring.

Choosing a mattress for snoring may support better sleep by making side sleeping more comfortable. Taking it a step further and pairing it with an adjustable base can help provide the right balance of pressure relief, spinal alignment, and head elevation. Other mattress features, such as contouring support and hypoallergenic materials, may also help relieve symptoms that are known to cause snoring.

Considering that we spend about one-third of our lives in bed, mattress choice is an important decision, explained Alyssa Lawrenson, chiropractor and owner of Refined Chiropractic and Wellness in Parker, Colorado. “A quality mattress is a good investment to make because of the amount of time you spend on it.”

In this review, we’ll explore the four top-rated mattresses we think are best for snoring. These beds are designed for side sleepers, compatible with adjustable bases, and promote a healthier sleep environment to help snorers—and their partners—get a better night’s sleep.

“I have been sleeping well in our new Helix Midnight mattress. My husband has complained about the last two mattresses we have owned but he hasn’t complained about this one at all and he is hard to please. He especially likes the edge support since he is a side sleeper and does not feel like he is going to fall out of bed. He also likes it is not too stiff but still supportive. We were a little skeptical because this was our first time buying a mattress online, but the favorable return policy made that decision easier. We are very pleased with our purchase.”

— Kathy A., verified buyer on 08/02/2024

“Unboxing and opening the mattress it expanded almost immediately, which was nice. The mattress was way more firm than we like, and we have both been experiencing back pain since sleeping on it. We bought it specifically because it said it was great for side sleepers and back sleepers but that unfortunately has not been our experience. If you want a firm mattress, it would be great for you! Also it hasn’t been as cool as we expected, which it was advertised to be cool.”

Our expert take on the Titan Plus mattress

The Titan Plus is constructed with a durable coil base and a gel memory foam layer to support higher-weight sleepers while keeping them cool. Its optional GlacioTex™ cooling cover helps remove heat from the mattress for a more comfortable sleep.

Best Mattress for Snoring in 2024, Tested by Our Sleep Experts (22)

The Titan Plus performed well in support (4/5) and pressure relief (4.5/5) for higher-weight sleepers. Its firm feel (rated 8/10 in firmness) is ideal for back and stomach sleepers who need extra support to keep their spine in a neutral position. The mattress’s construction features high-density foam and strong coils, providing a supportive surface without too much sinkage. While its firm support may be ideal for higher-weight sleepers, it may be too firm to offer pressure relief for lighter-weight (less than 130 pounds) and average-weight (130–250 pounds) sleepers.

The slight bounce from the coils offers added ease of movement, making it easier for higher-weight sleepers to change positions, but motion isolation was not great, and could be disruptive for people who share a bed.

Despite being a firmer option, the mattress also provides decent pressure relief, especially for back sleepers, who may benefit from the even weight distribution provided by a firm bed surface.

How we test the best mattresses for snoring

Our Reviews Team has dedicated more than 1,000 hours to researching the mattress industry, consulting at least 10 health care professionals and testing roughly 40 brands and 130 unique mattress models for quality and comfort. We’ve also interviewed 16 older adults who recently purchased a mattress and surveyed more than 3,200 recent mattress buyers to understand their experiences shopping for a new bed.

Each mattress undergoes a rigorous 36-page testing procedure to score its different characteristics, including firmness, support, and other aspects most shoppers consider when shopping for a new mattress. We choose the best mattresses for snoring based on factors such as firmness, pressure relief, and support. See how we tested the most important considerations for this review below.

Firmness

Like most mattress brands in the industry, we use a one-to-10 scoring method when testing for mattress firmness, with 6.5 being a true medium firm. Our testers rate this by lying on the surface and comparing the feel to other mattresses we’ve tested and rated. Material density and coil strength influence a mattress’s firmness the most.

People who snore generally appreciate mattresses that are medium to firm on the firmness scale, but higher-weight sleepers may find better support with a firm mattress.

Pressure relief

We rate pressure relief on a scale of one to five, with five being the most pressure-relieving. We consider how it feels and use a pressure map with sensors to visualize pressure points around the body. Blue and green pressure map A mat with sensors that detects pressure buildup when someone lies across it results show great pressure relief, while yellows, oranges, and reds indicate pressure build-up.

Because people who snore are advised to sleep on their sides, and side sleepers are prone to pressure build-up in the hips and shoulders, we only selected mattresses that scored four or higher in pressure relief.

Support

We score support on a scale of one to five, with five being the most supportive. Mattresses with strong support contour the curves of your body, particularly the lower back or midsection. Not only do we feel support during testing, but we can also visualize it through pressure map results. Maps with mostly white space at the lower back indicate the mattress isn’t making contact with the area, which means the mattress isn’t supportive.

People who snore especially appreciate support that keeps the spine in alignment while side sleeping.

See our sleep methodology page to learn more about our mattress testing and scoring methods.

Adjustable bed base

An adjustable bed base allows you to elevate your head, which can help keep your airways open and reduce snoring. Raising the upper body helps prevent the tongue and soft tissues from collapsing into the throat, improving airflow.

These pillows often have contoured designs to support the neck and shoulders and improve your sleep posture.

CPAP therapy

While not all snoring leads to health issues, it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea, a serious condition where the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, leading to pauses in breathing. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAPContinuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for sleep apnea. A CPAP machine includes a hose connected to a mask or nosepiece that delivers constant air pressure to help users breathe while sleeping. ) therapy is a highly effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP machine delivers pressurized air through a mask to keep the airway open throughout the night, reducing or eliminating snoring.

CPAP machines can only be ordered by a doctor, who prescribes the pressure settings based on the specific amount of pressure the patient needs to keep their airway open during sleep. For those diagnosed with sleep apnea, this therapy can significantly improve sleep quality and reduce some of the health risks linked with untreated sleep apnea.

Selecting the best mattress for snoring comes down to sleep style and preferences. The Nectar Premier Memory Foam provides a plush, comfortable feel with excellent motion isolation, making it suitable for couples, especially those prone to overheating while sleeping. For budget-conscious shoppers, the DreamCloud Memory Foam offers strong support and a hypoallergenic cover that can benefit sleepers who are sensitive to allergens. Lastly, the Titan Plus is the best choice for higher-weight people who need firm support, particularly back and stomach sleepers.

Frequently asked questions

Medium to medium-firm mattresses are generally best for snoring because they provide the right balance of support and comfort. A mattress that’s too soft can cause your body to sink into it, potentially misaligning your spine and constricting your airways. A mattress that’s too firm may cause discomfort at your pressure points (hips, shoulders). A medium-firm mattress is most likely to allow enough sinkage to give relief to the pressure points, maintain spinal alignment, and help keep the airway open by promoting better sleep posture.

Yes, a mattress can help reduce snoring for some people, especially if it encourages better sleep posture. Mattresses that support side sleeping are particularly effective, as sleeping on your side helps to keep your airway open. Hypoallergenic mattresses can also help by reducing the allergens that can irritate the airways and worsen snoring.

You may be able to reduce your snoring by making some simple lifestyle changes. Sleeping on your side instead of your back can help, as it prevents the soft tissue at the back of your throat from collapsing into your airway. If you sleep best on your back, though, elevating your head with extra pillows or an adjustable bed may also help keep your airway open.

Other helpful strategies include maintaining a healthy weight, staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime, and treating any underlying allergies or nasal congestion.
